Therapy
At times throughout our lives, we may feel stressed, anxious or depressed, or may be having relationship or work issues. We may feel stuck, unsure of our feelings, and how to move forward.
During these times, we can benefit from talking to a counsellor, to sit in a safe space, where we can work through our concerns, and look deeper into our thoughts and emotions. Through self-awareness and self-empowerment, we can learn to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.
WHAT IS COUNSELLING
Counselling is a professional helping relationship, involving the therapist and the client working together. Counselling gives someone the space to talk, hence it is often described as a talking therapy.
- Therapists do not give advice. They help the client work through the problem themselves.
- Listening is a key skill in counselling as clients may not get this from other people in their lives. But therapists are also helping clients process their thoughts, access their emotions, collaborating on problem-solving and offering a third perspective.
- Counselling can benefit everyone as we learn to access and process our emotions on a deeper level.
- Confidentiality is a big part of counselling and therapists will keep anything said to them private. However, there are a few exceptional circumstances where a therapist may need to break confidentiality.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY
The main differences are:
counselling is generally shorter-term, focused on present-day issues, and aims to provide guidance and coping strategies for specific problems
psychotherapy is typically a longer-term, deeper process that explores more fundamental and long-standing issues, often delving into a client's past to gain deeper insight and resolve inherent difficulties.
However, the terms can be used interchangeably, and many professionals (myself included) identify as both counsellors and psychotherapists
